my work and research the one thing that keeps on coming back in young and old.
Pain is a leading issue in the lives of many. To understand pain better we have
to differentiate it first:
There is mental pain, being hurt, having problems or real psychological
Physical pain, this is a pain you
can feel somewhere in the body.
Phantom pain, this is the pain of
a body part that is taken away or not there
one can be split again into many layers
of different forms of pain. When a customer comes at my working place the first
talks are the most important. They are personal and in dept. Not a ten-minute medical review of what is in the
books. That is proven impossible with the pain as phenomena.
pain can be caused by mental problems but also due to a missing body part. All
three pains interfere with each other. Children seem to be the clearest cases of pain observation but recently
it becomes clear that even children rarely can be exactly diagnosed with pain when the source is not a visible one.
of pain varies per person and is hardly ever the same. Most pain can be treated
but some are there for a reason. A
warning of awareness. Pain is a signal from the past into the future. It may
even be a guide to a new lifestyle, a
change or a return to former habits. Unlikely to most but pain can be shared.
When cared for in the right way, the pain is felt in a different way.
some persons, pain is a desire, a need
and something they wish to feel to be alive. These persons use pain as a part
of their satisfaction and lifestyle. They need it to live a meaningful life.
One problem we face is the duration and magnitude of pain. Can we carry it and how long it will last? Questions that can hardly be answered in all cases. We know that there is an incredible pain when we lost a loved one, but how long this will stay is impossible to tell. On the other hand, the open wound can be predicted in a timeframe. We expect a broken leg to be strong again in weeks, not months or years. (end of part 1)
